This text presents an excerpt from research conducted in the field of Mathematics Education, in a PhD course of the Graduate Program in Education at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). This excerpt presents the process of developing and implementing a pedagogical project inspired by the Freirian perspective entitled “Village of Numbers”. The objective of the project was to develop linguistic and mathematical literacy activities in a second-year elementary school class at a public school in the state of Santa Catarina. At the same time, the project activities served as instruments to collect data for doctoral research, as they allowed us to understand and interpret the participants’ prior knowledge of mathematics and Portuguese, their perceptions of what they experienced in the project, and how their mathematical and linguistic literacy processes unfolded in order to interpret the world.
