Abstract

The present study compares the maturity level for literacy and numeracy of boys and girls in urban and rural areas of Huancavelica, focusing on the deficient results in reading, writing and mathematics during the first years of primary education. The 5-6 Form B test was used, with a descriptive comparative approach and a non-experimental cross-sectional design covering 31 children from urban and rural areas, out of a total of 260 children in the population. The analysis revealed notable disparities in various aspects of the growth of six-year-old infants in Huancavelica during the year 2023. In skills of understanding, perception, anticipation, and literacy and math skills, children in urban areas demonstrated markedly superior performance compared to those in rural areas, revealing a disparity in the development of cognitive abilities. Although both sets demonstrated a medium-high level of motor skills, the findings highlight the impact of the educational environment on cognitive abilities, underscoring the relevance of implementing inclusive strategies to promote educational equity in rural areas.
