Abstract

The present study was carried out in the Camal Municipal de Huancavelica, Peru. Data were recorded from 111 Criollo sheep from breeders of different locations in the area, of both sexes and two ages (4 and 6 teeth), controlled in the period from February 2022 to March 2022, with the objective of determining phenotypic correlations between PVS and biometric measurements: body length (LC), withers height (ALCR), thoracic depth (PTR), thoracic breadth (AMTR), thoracic perimeter (PT), loin breadth (AMLM) and loin length (LALM). There was no effect of sex on PVS, but there was an effect of age. The PVS variable was higher in the age of 6 teeth with respect to 4 teeth in Creole sheep, but in sex the highest weight was obtained in females with respect to males. Moderately low phenotypic correlations were evidenced between PVS with PT=0.53***, LC with PTR=0.46***, PVS with AMTR=0.46***, ALCR with PTR=0.42***, PT with AMLM=0.57***, PT with LALM= 0.58** and AMRT with PT=0.71***. It is concluded that PT, PVS with AMLM and LALM of the criollo sheep studied can be used as predictors for live weight.
