Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the metal content of the hematite deposit in the Latapuquio annex (Lircay, Angaraes) and classify it according to its economic viability. A quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional methodology was applied, analyzing samples from the deposit using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) at the RCJ Labs Universal laboratory (Huancayo, Peru). The results revealed an average iron (Fe) content of 50.55%. This value places the ore in the medium-grade category (standard 30-60% Fe), falling below the economic profitability threshold for direct shipping ore extraction, which requires grades >60% Fe. However, recent scientific literature confirms the technical feasibility of processing ores with this grade using beneficiation technologies, such as reducing roasting followed by magnetic separation or reverse flotation, to obtain commercial concentrates. Additionally, its history of local use and mineralogical properties suggest an alternative industrial potential as a pigment for anti-corrosive paints. It is concluded that, while the deposit is not profitable for direct exploitation, it represents a resource with potential for valorization through secondary metallurgical processes or specific industrial applications that warrant technical and economic feasibility studies.
